Thief

You are but a thief
Of all that was mine
Insistent on stealing
The passage of time.

You’re the soft ray of light
to which each morning I rise
The most bitter of coffees
And every good-bye.

You’re the petal released
From my imperfect rose
My fountain of youth
Soothsayer and prose.

You’re each chosen word
In my amorous rhyme
And overtaxed eyes
When I turn out the light.

Today I make peace
With your imminent adieu
If you forget me tomorrow
I’ll still love the thief in you.
