A Smile to Remember

Like the one in a million
Destined for light
Or a lover, friend
And partner for life

The smile we remember
Speaks louder than words
What sets it apart
Is the heart, not its curve.

It scales through our core
Like moon-bound feathers
A dolphin’s ascent
Or cherished love letter.

‘Tis what I perceive
When I think of the man
Who walked me in white
Now asleep in the sand.

A smile to remember
Is what I yearn to give
The prime tell-tale sign
Of life radiantly lived.

***

We all know someone whose face comes to mind when we think of a genuine smile. For me, that person is my uncle, whose effortless smile told volumes of his humility, grace, contentedness, and gratitude. I am thankful to have married a man whose gentle smile mirrors his.

1) My beloved godfather/uncle
2) My husband and uncle
